Just surfed a number of blogs on the net and most of them have the same content regarding a certain scene on Desperate Housewives. Filipino Doctors (as expected even non-doctors) got offended on this particular scene in the series' season premiere where Susan, character played by Terri Hatcher gave a very insulting remark about doctors and med schools in the Philippines.
Filipino doctors are now demanding ABC Studio and Walt Disney to give a formal public apology and removal of the said scene in that episode.
it's a fucking figure of speech you sensitive medical pricks. lollers.
To be honest I'm stuck on the middle. I feel very offended for our Filipino Doctors but on the other hand I think its really overkill to make this issue that big. Oh well, maybe Filipinos are really that sensitive. Can't really blame them.
but seriously, i don't think the scriptwriter and the script consultant just pulled that one out of their asses, there must be something wrong with our med school reputations abroad, enough for some hyperficial show to include it as a line.
instead of whining, the med schools must do something about it and maybe the next time, we'll hear pinoy doctors are the best from future foreign telenovelas.
Actually, the reputation of our country as seen by westerners involve Filipinas marrying middle-aged Caucasians and our medical schools here. Even George Carlin has made reference to it in one of his routines. This is because of how many nurses we turn out every single year; so much that they think our med schools are like nurse factories. Earn tuition, teach them a bit, let them graduate, let them pass the board, then send them away. Something like that...
If we're the type of people who gets pissed off just because of a jab from a TV show, then maybe we deserved to be made fun of after all.
It's a classic clash of cultures. Americans trash one another jokingly like it's another day at the office and they laugh at it. Do it here in the Philippines and it is a different story. It will be more than a joke.
